  • There is a six hours’ time difference between South Africa and China. For instance if it is 16:00 in China, then it will be 10:00 in South Africa.

 

  • For most of the time, you will not need to fill in immigration cards at the time of entry for South Africa.

 

  • The South African currency is the RAND, you may carry in/out a maximum of Five Thousand Rand in cash (R5000.00) at the boarder of South Africa. Anything above this amount you will need to declare to customs on arrival or departure. 

 

  • There are three international credit cards commonly used in South Africa namely: VISA, American Express, and MasterCard. If you have any of these you do not need to worry as these cards are widely accepted throughout the destinations along your trip. 

 

  • If you are entering South Africa from another country such as Kenya or Brazil, you will be required to have and produce a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.

 

  • Please note that Winter in South Africa is from May to August and that Summer is from December to February, dress and pack accordingly.

 

  • Most goods purchased within South Africa contain 15% value added tax (VAT). If you wish, you may be liable for a tax refund upon departure. Simply retain all receipts of your purchases detailing the transactions. 

 

  • South Africa has a well-established telephone and mobile phone network as well as satellite communication services. You may continue using your existing cellphone's SIM card simply by utilising the roaming service (if you have this available from your network carrier). An alternative however is to purchase a readily available local SIM card upon arrival for your trip. However, please note that locations such as camping sites / wildlife reserves/ National Parks, etc. may suffer poor network services.

  • There are eleven official languages in South Africa. English is however widely used.

 

  • Most importantly, similar to other renown travel destinations, South Africa can be and is a safe place. There is much for South Africa to be proud of as a travel destination. It has splendid culture, wonderful people, beautiful wildlife, a rich variety of historical sites as well as numerous upon numerous tourist attractions to keep you entertained and fascinated. As a traveller however, you just need to practice a general sense of security such as you would anywhere else.
